With their melancholic melodies and the typical finnish dejection, the change of clear vocals and absymal nasty grunts Barren Earth are not unsimilar to the concept of Amorphis – but Barren Earth cultivate more the ugly, unbeautiful side of music.
“The Devil’s Resolve” is more raw and dodgy as the last works of the bulky compatriots. Also you will never find the addiction to pop music on this second output of the six guys (who are coming out of bands like Kreator, Moonsorrow or Mannhai) – even though they exactly know how to plug in melting parts into jagged riff and soundwalls (for example “Vintage Warlords”).
The mixture of melancholic doom and melodic death metal works great on “The Devil’s Revolve” and normally it has to appeal to everyone for whom Amorphis last were becoming too polished and Swallow the Sun hardly approachable.
Furthermore the finnish have a little hit on board with the folk-prog-doom track “As it is written”.
