People who know me a bit better, when it comes to my musical tastes, it could be considered as a “breach of standards” when getting interfered with bands beyond the Polish prog Scene … well, in fact …YES! Without really moving away from my personal likings, I found myself wrapped into a phantasmagoria of sounds carried out from HYPNOS 69 and in a way turned out to be a kind of imaginary web , so I got tangled and glued like a fly.
“HYPNOS” from mythology was the impersonation of “Sleep”, the twin brother of “Thanatos”( Death) and their mother “Night”, they all dwelled in a dark cave where the sun light never reached. The number 69 refers to “divide” whom the mother was “Selene” (moon) …and so we welcome you to the world of “HYPNOS 69”.
With the latest release of these Belgians, the double cd & lp “LEGACY” and in fact one of the best albums in 2010, truly leaves miles away many of the year’s releases! HYPNOS 69 as a band has circulated for at least 10 years in the prog rock scene, receiving the adoration of those who have heard their music and indulged their live shows clinging to rather loyal accolades . Giving hundreds of shows only in Belgium and a number of appearances in several countries in Europe, playing in the best venues and well known festivals and also making preparations for the 10th annual Rock , progressive festival known as CRESCENDO due for the 21st , 22nd ,23rd , of AUGUST 2010. (some of them ,they’ve already done). “LEGACY” is the third studio recorded album after the “THE ECLECTIC MEASURE” & “ THE INTRIGUE OF PERCEPTION”, all truly great releases. As a concept, “Legacy” deals with the story of “The Apple Of Eden” and how it drifted into the rivers of time. Symbolically within this journey, there are also remarks taken from famous scientist & alchemist ISAAC NEWTON and the entire package of the album is adorned by the marvelous artwork (MALLEUS ART LAB), with paintings of the Apple and the Serpent in the garden of Eden, adding references to ancient alchemy and the legacy of superior knowledge.
The quartet apart from intriguing is also multi-talented. Within this album one can listen to extra ordinary sounds coming from instruments such a Theremin , baritone Guitar, moog Taurus, Saxophone, Mellotron, and Hammonds. Four individuals and musicians making you wonder if the “flower power” era ever ended and if you listen carefully you could have sworn JOHN BONHAM from legendary LED ZEPPELIN is playing in the background. This band is so good in what they do, that you could easily tag them as “LOONIES” !!! seriously though HYPNOS 69 cover a wide range of the last 35 years of musical genres. It’s a band you can characterize as Rock, Prog, Psych but also add a dose of Jazz, Blues, or even Stoner!
The main attraction of this act is surely STEVE HOUTMEYERS fitting like a glove along with the sensual delivery of STEVEN MARX’s saxophone. As for the drummer DAVE HOUTMEYERS I couldn’t find a better description than “Machine”! The overall effect of continuous delirium emerging is owed to guitarist TOM VANCLEAR. If you ever get the chance listening to this who will also realize the passion and virtuosity the band delivers within it’s music giving you the impression it all is escaping from a kind of ‘basement’ ,waiting for the right kind of audience to be uplifted. As for the talent, then what more I can say? The result to all this is ‘grabbing’ your heart and soul with overwhelming compositions and sounds coming from nostalgic yesterdays and ending up to today’s reality but makes you think that maybe things are not as bad as they seem after all. That same magical journey I have experience with bands such as ASTRA & ANEKDOTEN. Main influences are surely coming from KING CRIMSON, THE BEATLES, CAMEL, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, LED ZEPPELIN, PINK FLOYD, HAWKWIND, THE WHO, CAPTAIN BEYOND, ELOY, or even BLACK BONZO! But the overall emotional impact will instantly erase any kind of resemblance. The most important thing is to let yourself go with the flow and enjoy this remarkable musical journey, then HYPNOS 69 will easily transcend you into their realm!
