The Spanish band ZARPA have been active (on and off) since 1977 and have dedicated themselves to classic Heavy Metal in their native language. Until now, the guys from Valencia have released seven studio-albums and have attained cult status outside Spain. In their own country everybody knows the group even if one is not Metal fan at all as its one of the longest living bands there. ZARPAs fans are very enthusiastic about their live concerts, which could also be seen in Germany at their gig at the 2009 Swordbrothers Festival. In their native country Spain, ZARPA are a legend since their spectacular video-clip for “Herederos de un Imperio” (1984) and the crowd of fans became bigger and bigger.
Three years after “Iberia” (also on Karthago Records), their new album “Las Puertas del Tiempo” will be released. This album contains powerful and dynamic, but also melodic songs. It offers Heavy Metal with a traditional songwriting but also with a very good and powerful production. Bandleader Vicente Feijoo’s melodic but also rough voice will surely be liked by all Metal-fans. Track 6 has a balladesque beginning which reminds one of Spanish folklore music; not many bands would dare to combine this with Heavy Metal. Their style can be compared with ACCEPT or maybe JUDAS PRIEST (in their middle phase), though ZARPA’s Spanish lyrics give them a more exotic flair (for our ears). The new album is a little more gloomy than its predecessor, though it offers more potential hits. You can almost feel a little 70ies influence or it might just be the prevailing mood…
A really great album! 65 minutes of the finest music from the Spanish Metal flagship!
